The scenario is always the same. She needs to check an important document, pay an account, or log into an app she hasn’t touched in eight months. But the app logged her out, she doesn’t remember the password she created in 2017 (which was definitely some variation of her children’s birthdays with no capital letters), and now the screen is asking for verification.
I sit at my desk, navigate to the recovery portal, enter her phone number, and hit Send Code.
A timer appears on my screen. It starts counting down from 59 seconds.

- “Switch between apps.” (She will accidentally lock the phone and turn the volume all the way down).
Instead, you have to guide her using purely physical, visual landmarks:
“Ma, do you see the little white message bubble with 3 dots on it? No, not the green WhatsApp bubble. The white one next to the camera icon. Tap it gently once. Don’t press hard, just tap!”
And when that glorious six-digit string finally gets read aloud… three digits at a time, followed by a long pause to adjust her reading glasses and the code is accepted and you’re logged in, the collective sigh of relief could power an entire national power grid.
The Highest Form of Love
It is easy to laugh at the mess, but there is something tender about these little domestic tech rescue missions.
Our parents grew up in a world of physical paper ledgers, post office letters, and landline telephone booths. Now, they are expected to navigate dynamic biometric logins, cloud storage, encrypted vaults, and vanishing temporary codes just to read an electric bill.
They call us because they trust us to translate this overwhelming digital world into something that makes sense.
So the next time your mom calls you in a panic because her email vanished into thin air, take a deep breath. Clear your schedule for the next twenty minutes.
And whatever you do, don’t hit “Resend Code” until she actually has her glasses on.
